Stacy Lewis Wins ShopRite LPGA Classic Presented by Acer
Regains World No. 1 Ranking
Stacy Lewis blew away the field at the ShopRite LPGA Classic on Sunday with a 67 that took her to 16 under par for the week, holding off Christina Kim at -10 and a quartet of players at -9. With the win, she regains the world No. 1 ranking that had been held by Inbee Park for 59 straight weeks.
After her round she spoke of the nostalgia of winning for the second time at Stockton Seaview. "I don't know what it is about this place," she said. "It's just really special to me. I've played some really good golf here."
Kim, shot two over par in the final round to finish in solo second, spoke of the overwhelming fan support she fell all week long in South Jersey.
"Having people shout my name and telling me that they're rooting for me, it always brings a smile to my face," she said.
Lewis echoed those sentiments in describing the massive galleries that followed her all week in Galloway. "It's unbelievable the amount of people we get out at this tournament. You finish there at 18 and you're just absolutely mobbed all the way through there. There's really no escape. So it's just cool to see all the people that come out and to me it feels like it's growing every year."
Lewis, Wind the Headliners in Saturday's Second Round
2012 Champion Leading at 12 Under Par
Stacy Lewis stands at -12 after she fired a 63 to tie the course record for lowest score through 36 holes, and sits atop the leaderboard after Saturday's round. Lewis, who teed off at 7:45am on a breezy morning, completed her round before the winds began howling on a sunny day that brought massive crowds to historic Bay course at Stockton Seaview Resort.
After her round, Lewis spoke about how she enjoyed the shot-making creativity that is required on windy days.
"If you look at a lot of my wins and a lot of the courses I played well on it's when it's windy and when it's hard," Lewis said after her round. "Today we had more of a north wind and yesterday we had a south wind, so the golf course can change overnight, and you have to be able to adjust with it and you have to be able to change your shots."
Lewis tied the 130-shot tournament record set by Amy Benz in 1996, a score matched by Denise Killen in 2004 and Lewis in 2012 enroute to her first ShopRite LPGA Classic victory. The final score record of -17 is held by Annika Sorenstam, who shot that total twice in her three wins at this event.
The final round tees off Sunday morning shortly after 30 contestants compete in the annual Million Dollar Shootout held in the fairway of the 18th hole.
