Volunteer Corner: Serena Smith

The ShopRite LPGA Classic Presented by Acer is proud to bring you the third installment of the Volunteer Corner. In each edition, we will highlight a volunteer who has a unique connection to the Tournament. For our third edition, we go inside the Tournament Office, where we speak with Administration Chairman Serena Smith.

How did you get started volunteering at the ShopRite LPGA Classic Presented by Acer?

I worked for Atlantic City Electric Co. from 1968 to 2000 and there we volunteered for the Community Food Bank. After retirement, I wanted to give back so I signed up to continue my volunteering with the Community Food Bank. Along with a group from the Food Bank, I started volunteering at the ShopRite LPGA Classic in 2002.

How many years have you volunteered at the ShopRite LPGA Classic Presented by Acer?

I started volunteering in 2002, and have now completed 8 years.

What committees have you volunteered on?

Merchandise Tent, Uniform Distribution, Walking Scorer, Volunteer Services and Administration.

Do you have any stories or fond memories that you’d like to share?

Before volunteering, I was a spectator at the first tournament in 1986. What an exciting time sitting at the 18th hole watching Juli Inkster win the tournament. At that time I wasn’t golfing, I just liked to watch golf on television.

Now as a golfer yourself, do you ever pick up any pointers when you take a break from volunteering and watch the professionals?

The flow of the player’s swing is something that I would watch.

What is your favorite part of the Tournament?

I still get star struck at the first hole waiting to hear the Starter announce the players.

What advice would you give to a first time volunteer?

Have respect for the golfers’ responsibilities and enjoy the tournament.

That is definitely great advice. What does “A Shore Tradition” mean to you?

Attend a yearly professional sport in Galloway Township, N.J.

We certainly hope it stays "A Shore Tradition" for years to come. With past players like Betsy King, Nancy Lopez, Juli Inkster, Annika Sorenstam and last year’s champion Stacy Lewis, who is your favorite?

I like to watch Laura Davies and Christina Kim (I have a picture at home taken with her).   I was also impressed with Annika Sorenstam, the winner of the 1998, 2002 and 2005 tournaments.
