Tournament Facts:
- The ShopRite LPGA Classic is a $1.5 million, 54-hole championship tournament sanctioned by the Ladies Professional Golf Association. Since the 1990s, ShopRite has donated $25 million to charity through its sponsorship of LPGA events.
- 2012 will be the 14th time Seaview has hosted the event.
- Brittany Lincicome won the most recent ShopRite Classic, in 2011.
- Wakefern Food Corporation became the tournament’s title sponsor in 1992, when it was renamed the ShopRite LPGA Classic.
- The event made its debut as the “Atlantic City Classic” in 1986 and was played in 20 consecutive spring seasons through 2006. There were no LPGA events in Atlantic City between 2007 and 2009. The Classic returned to the area in 2010.
- The tournament has attracted some of the biggest names in women’s golf, including Betsy King, Juli Inkster, Nancy Lopez, Annika Sorenstam and Michelle Wie.
- The ShopRite Classic has become a true community effort – with a small army of hundreds of volunteers donating their time and talent to support the tournament operation.
- The first Classic awarded a $225,000 purse. That number reached $1 million in 1998.
- Only two players have won the tournament three times: Betsy King and Annika Sorenstam.
- Annika Sorenstam holds the event scoring record at 17 under, which she accomplished twice in her three Classic wins. Laura Davies and Jimin Kang both shot a single-round 62 in 2005, setting the tournament record. Kang also set the nine-hole scoring record that year, at 27.
- Betsy King qualified for the World Golf Hall of Fame with her 30th career win at the 1995 Classic.
- The Classic ended in a tie only once, in 1988. A sudden death playoff determined the champion – Juli Inkster over Beth Daniel.
