Galloway, NJ (April 27, 2015) – Brooke Henderson, one of the most decorated amateurs in Canadian golf history, and Candy Hannemann, a former LPGA pro making a comeback bid after dedicating the last six years to starting a family, have accepted sponsor exemptions to play in the 2015 ShopRite LPGA Classic Presented by Acer.
Henderson, 17, is coming off a third place finish this past weekend at the Swinging Skirts LPGA Classic, where she shot a tournament record 65 in the second round. She was the world’s top-ranked amateur having won more than 50 events before she turned professional this past December. As an amateur, she made the cut in all four LPGA events she entered, including a tie for 10th in the 2014 U.S. Women’s Open and a tie for 26th at the Kraft Nabisco Championship.
“From providing early playing opportunities to the likes of Lexi Thompson, Michelle Wie and Paula Creamer, we have a history of cultivating the future stars of women’s golf,” said Tim Erensen, executive director of the ShopRite LPGA Classic Presented by Acer. “We look forward to watching Brooke compete at the highest level in women’s golf for many years to come.”
Hannemann, 34, is a Brazilian whose Olympic dream is the focus of her comeback bid. She joined the LPGA in 2003 but left the tour in 2008 to start a family. Candy is returning to professional golf determined to play well enough to represent her native country when golf returns to the Olympics in Rio de Janiero in 2016. The ShopRite LPGA Classic Presented by Acer will be her first LPGA event since 2008, and comes just seven months after the birth of her second child.
“We are inspired by Candy’s return to golf and her desire to represent Brazil when it hosts the Olympics next summer,” said Erensen. “We’re excited to be the first step in the pursuit of her Olympic goals.”
The ShopRite LPGA Classic Presented by Acer will be held Monday, May 25th through Sunday, May 31st. The 144-player field will compete over three rounds for a $1.5 million purse at Stockton Seaview Hotel and Golf Club in Galloway, New Jersey. The tournament will be televised on Golf Channel.
