Eligible Players Selected in Partnership with MVPindex, the Industry Leader in Social Media Ranking, Measurement and Valuation
For the first time in history, the realm of social media will select a player to play in the field of an LPGA event, organizers of the ShopRite LPGA Classic Presented by Acer announced today. The tournament, relying on research from MVPindex, identified four active professional golfers who will leverage their social media following for a fan vote to determine which of them will be added to the field.
Click here to cast your vote. The survey will open at 12pm eastern on May 1 and close at 11:59am eastern on May 8. Only one vote per fan is allowed. Real-time results are posted on the tournament Twitter feed – @ShopRiteLPGA – and the winner will be revealed immediately after the poll closes.
The participating players hail from four different continents – Europe, Asia and North and South America – and have a combined total of more than one million followers on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook. The players, in alphabetical order, are:
Susana Benavides – the only Bolivian-born golfer to ever play in an LPGA event. She played golf while attending Ohio State University and has competed on the Symetra Tour.
Carly Booth – a Scottish professional golfer. At age 17 she became the youngest Scot to qualify for the Ladies European Tour, where she has compiled two wins.
Sharmila Nicollet – the youngest Indian golfer to qualify for Ladies European Tour and only the second Indian to earn a full card on the tour. She has 11 professional wins.
Blair O’Neal – Golf Channel host has played more than 75 events on the Symetra Tour. Winner of the “Big Break: Dominican Republic” reality TV golf competition.
“Working with MVPIndex to grow our social media footprint has been a valuable experience,” said Tim Erensen, Executive Director of the ShopRite LPGA Classic Presented by Acer. “This contest gives our fans a choice to select one of the final participants in our tournament and exposes our event to millions of new fans around the world. Not only is that great for our tournament, it's also great for professional golf."
MVPindex, the de facto social media index and valuation platform for sports and entertainment, provided the research from which the four players were selected. The company’s proprietary technology ranks, measures and values the social media engagement of more than 42,000 athletes, teams, leagues, entertainers and brands across the major social media platforms.
“We’re excited to help showcase some of the most influential women in professional golf,” said Kyle Nelson, Co-Founder of MVPindex. “Women’s golf has always been at the forefront of fan engagement on the course, so it makes perfect sense that the ShopRite LPGA Classic Presented by Acer would be the first professional golf tournament to use fan engagement to help shape the field of play.”
