LPGA pro and New Jersey native Marina Alex won the annual Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield (Horizon BCBSNJ) of New Jersey Healthy Steps Challenge held during this year’s ShopRite LPGA Classic Presented by Acer. As a result, Horizon BCBSNJ has made a $5,800 donation to the AtlantiCare Foundation that will be dedicated to the AtlantiCare Cancer Care Institute, a Fox Chase Cancer Center Partner.
Alex competed in the Healthy Steps Challenge against fellow LPGA pro Pernilla Lindberg. Alex tallied 58,180 steps over the three-round LPGA tournament at Stockton Seaview Hotel and Golf Club, while Lindberg totaled 56,176 steps. Prior to the event, Horizon BCBSNJ pledged to donate $100 for every 1,000 steps the winning player recorded over the three rounds.
“I cannot thank Horizon BCBSNJ enough for their donation to AtlantiCare,” said Marina. “I know that everyone in some way is affected by cancer, either personally or through friends and family. Every dollar matters toward finding a cure and helping those in need. Pernilla and I were thrilled to help raise money, but more importantly to continue raising awareness,” said Marina. “It’s for a good cause and it fits in with my healthy lifestyle,” added Lindberg.
“The ongoing fight against cancer requires a team effort. We’re proud to be teammates with Pernilla, Marina and the great people associated with the 2018 ShopRite LPGA Classic Presented by Acer,” said Jonathan R. Pearson, Executive Director of Corporate Social Responsibility for Horizon BCBSNJ. “We cannot thank them enough for joining with us to help raise money for this incredibly worthy cause and we look forward to building on the relationships we have forged.”
The AtlantiCare Cancer Care Institute, with locations in Egg Harbor Township and Cape May Court House, offers the full spectrum of cancer care and tailors treatment plans to fit each patient’s unique needs.
“The AtlantiCare Cancer Care Institute is grateful to have Horizon BCBSNJ partner with us to raise awareness and funds to support our ongoing efforts to educate, screen and treat cancer in our shared community,” said Samantha Kiley, Executive Director, AtlantiCare Foundation. “Incorporating the steps challenge into the recent LPGA tournament was a wonderful way to impact our local community. On behalf of the survivors and families we serve, we thank Horizon and the LPGA players who participated in the challenge.”
The ShopRite LPGA Classic Presented by Acer conducts community events throughout the year to benefit regional organizations and nonprofits. ShopRite, through its association with the LPGA, has donated more than $33 million to organizations in the South Jersey region.
